Private Residential Retrofit

Dalmally Road showcases a design-led approach to retrofitting an existing Victorian terrace. The intention was to vastly improve the property's thermal performance and minimise operating costs moving forward. An external wall insulation proposal was adopted as an alternative to internal wall insulation, which runs the risk of thermal bridging issues at the floor and wall junctions, moisture build-up around these areas, and disruption to inhabitants during construction. The key challenge was to balance the preservation of the ornamental facade and the typically blunt appearance of external wall insulation. Therefore, a considered, contemporary redesign of the skin was used to pay homage to the continuous characteristics of the terrace row. Simple, homogenous materials in neutral tones were selected to complement the surrounding vernacular. The thermal envelope is significantly enhanced through retrofitting the roof with improved insulation, upgraded windows and doors, and optimised solar shading for the south-facing openings. Subtle resign variation respects the horizontal geometry of the existing row of houses, creating a modern, energy-efficient home that remains sensitive to its context.
